Wanting Unlikely Characters in Super Smash Bros.
2ymyqh1.jpg
These types of character requests are enough to destroy an entire fandom. Especially on the Internet.
Nickname: Unlikely Character Supporters
Type: Video Game Fandoms
Status: Active

Every time a new Super Smash Bros. game or a DLC character gets announced, many fans have speculated what characters would be a fantastic audition to join in the world of Smash. While some ideas are good, most of them are unlikely and nonsensical.

Requirements For A Character To Join Super Smash Bros.

  1. The character must originate from video games, not from other media.
  2. Must be popular in the West and Japan. (Most importantly Japan)
  3. Nintendo must partner with the 3rd party developer and the IP owner.

Why They're the Unlikely Ones

An Example Of A Toxic Super Smash Bros. Fan Wanting An Unlikely Character For It.
  1. Many of these people are jerks who can never handle criticism. In fact, don't ever say *insert unlikely Smash Bros. candidate here* is unlikely because they will hunt you down like if it was rabbit season.
  2. They make up terrible excuses for unlikely characters such as "this character is popular", "this character has games on Nintendo platforms", "this character has a potential moveset". (Some characters are very unlikely for Smash and no excuse will change that.)
    • On a similar note, it's very easy to find ignoramuses who think that non-video game characters would be playable simply because of bad excuses such as "this character's moveset fits well in smash", "he/she is from a well-known cartoon/manga", or the infamous "this character has been in video games before". (Hear us out, non-video game characters will never be playable in Smash and that is final!)
    • Not helping at the fact where McLeodGaming's Super Smash Flash and Super Smash Flash 2, Secretofchaos’s Super Smash Bros. Infinite, and Chincherrinas's Smash Bros. Lawl and its spinoffs (DemicStudios is making the game based off the series) features non-video game characters like Goku, Luffy, Naruto, InuYasha, Mr. Incredible, Vegeta, Trunks, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Ichigo, Broly, Sasuke, Scott Pilgrim, and Kid Buu and some other unlikely characters such as Sora, Riku, Scorpion, and Sans. This may be uncommon but some Smash fans actually want to see them in the actual games just because they were in a fan game. (Of course, it's only a fan-game! Why the heck would most of these characters even be in the actual game when there are mostly zero chances of them coming to the actual games?)
  3. They will try to manipulate or force people into wanting unlikely characters. (Such manners are on on comparable greed and selfishness levels like Mr. Krabs!)
  4. The leaks are not any better, some leaks contain information that sounds unlikely such as users on 4chan or whatever "leaking" characters like Doomguy, Sora, Sans, Geno, and Steve. It does not help that YouTubers such as LaxChris talks about these kinds of leaks.
    • Speaking of leaks, they can manipulate people into believing those leaks.
  5. Circle-jerking, circle-jerking, everywhere. Very common for a Smash fandom to circle-jerk some characters.
  6. A lot of these boneheads treat their opinions like their facts.
  7. It's really common to see them start flame wars that are downright pathetic.
  8. They even make petitions on Change.org, which will never work. One example is this.
  9. These are the same meatheads who are ungrateful towards certain newcomers and want a certain newcomer to get replaced by a certain character such as Waluigi over Daisy, Geno over Piranha Plant, Sora or Goku over the Dragon Quest heroes, Steve or Master Chief over Banjo and Kazooie, Sans over Terry Bogard, Dante over Byleth etc. On the subject of this point, this can lead to certain players quitting Smash in general.
  10. There are even people trying to encourage others to want unlikely characters. In fact, even Funimation did this as well. We wish we were making this up...
  11. They are so obsessed with unlikely characters (such as Sora, Steve, Doomguy, Geno, and Sans) to the point that they only seem to care about themselves and associate them with the series.
  12. They fail to realize that many characters are unlikely to be in Smash due to some reasons being legit.
  13. At one point "#Sora4Smash" was trending on Twitter. In fact, this can go so out of hand that even Katsuhiro Harada made this meaning that if you spam him character requests on his Twitter account, he will mute you.
  14. Even Masahiro Sakurai knows how bad they are. A glance is enough.
  15. They are everywhere in social media, SmashBoards, and GameFAQs.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Some only take unlikely characters as a joke instead of taking them too seriously.
  2. Some people who want these characters still understand that unlikely characters are still unlikely. Too bad that they are overshadowed by their rabid counterparts.
  3. They can still make Mii recreations and mods of the characters, which is actually more than enough to compensate for their appearances, thus making it unnecessary to request these unlikely characters at all, but still.
  4. Some of their fanmade movesets for the unlikely characters (Including Smash Bros. Lawl videos) can be creative.

Examples of unlikely characters that people want in Smash

  • Waluigi (Super Mario): Even though he is a Nintendo character, and obviously a Mario character, there are nothing that makes him interesting as a playable character (depending on your opinion), and Waluigi is a spin-off Side character who is only created by Camelot and Fumihide Aoki for Wario to have a tennis partner, which is why Waluigi remains as an Assist Trophy character and Mii Fighter Hat. It's true that Waluigi can be funny at times and he would have a pretty unique moveset if he were to be a fighter, but Waluigi's status as a playable character promotion from Assist Trophy is Sakurai's decision. At least he is playable in Super Smash Flash 2.
  • Dante (Devil May Cry): Capcom has Mega Man, Ryu and Ken as fighters, Zero, Dr. Wily and Guile as assist trophies and Rahalos as a boss and a assist trophy that Capcom would be overreped if Dante would be in. Dante is in PlayStation Allstars Battle Royal which makes Him very unlikley for Smash Bros.
  • Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Roxas (Kingdom Hearts): Even though they are video game characters, and even though Tetsuya Nomura (The creator of Kingdom Hearts) is part of Square Enix, they are still owned by Disney, meaning that it would most likely be extremely hard to get them into the Super Smash Bros. series. And besides, Square Enix is known to be stingy with its IPs, which is why Final Fantasy got 2 music tracks, and Cloud's Fighter Spirits are only renders of him in the Super Smash Bros series. At least Sora is Playable in Super Smash Flash 2.
  • Master Chief and The Arbiter (Halo): Halo is mostly obscure (if not unpopular) in Japan (aside from an anime and being referenced in an episode of To Love-Ru) and Halo doesn't have much presence on Nintendo outside of the unreleased Halo DS and Minecraft.
  • Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Jax, Goro, and Shao Kahn (Mortal Kombat): Most Mortal Kombat games are banned in Japan. Persona, Bayonetta and Metal Gear were not banned in Japan unlike Mortal Kombat and toning down their moves would not help at all because it would betray the series if the characters have no fatalities. In Fact, Mortal Kombat is also hated by SJWs and parents, and the overall atmosphere is not suitable for all ages. Also, the series is now owned by the Warner Bros. company who is known for making DC movies, and that would be Licensing Nightmare.
  • George, Lizzie, and Ralph (Rampage): Simply because they were on Nintendo systems, even though this series is obscure in Japan.
  • Bendy (Bendy and the Ink Machine): This title is unpopular in Japan, and just because Bendy appeared on a Nintendo system doesn't mean he can join.
  • Baldi (Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning): His game never made it to Nintendo systems, and Baldi would be horribly out of place in a Super Smash Bros. game. Just because a PC indie game is popular, doesn't mean he would join the roster. In fact, why would Baldi join the fight, just to teach the fighters some maths?
  • Doomguy/Doomslayer, Cacodemon, and Cyberdemon (Doom): Old Doom games were from ID Software and not Bethesda and the fact that the Doom series is very unpopular and obscure in Japan. Games like Bayonetta and Persona 5 are popular Worldwide and are also SEGA properties which is why Bayonetta and Joker are in the series and Hideo Kojima requested that Solid Snake should be in Super Smash Bros. back in Melee's development which is why Snake is in Brawl. As for Banjo and Kazooie, their game was fairly successful in Japan (the first game mainly) and they were one of the only western characters to be a reasonable candidate in the franchise. The Doom series also has a demonic atmosphere, and is deemed inappropriate for children.
  • Dovahkiin (The Elder Scrolls): Simply because they were on Nintendo systems, but that doesn't mean Dovahkiin can join the roster.
  • B.J. Blazkowicz (Wolfenstein): Old Wolfenstein games were created by ID Software and not Bethesda. Simply because he was on Nintendo platforms, even though this series is obscure in Japan.
  • Heavy and Scout (Team Fortress 2), Gordon Freeman (Half-Life), and Chell and P-Body and Atlas (Portal): Valve has not made any games for Nintendo platforms (except for the LEGO Dimensions Portal DLC and Bridge Constructor Portal) and they are unheard of in Japan. Also, Valve has shown jealousy towards Nintendo to the point that they are not friends. "An iconic First Person Shooter", is not a valid reason for any of them to join the game.
  • Tracer, D.Va, Mercy, Reaper, Winston, McCree, Doomfist, Genji, and Brigitte (Overwatch): Simply because of this case as well as Overwatch being on the Switch. Blizzard Entertainment is shown to be obscure in Japan.
  • Soldier (Call of Duty): Activision, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch hasn't been giving much support for Nintendo, and the soldier is incredibly one-dimensional. While Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, Corrin and the Inklings made sense to put in Smash, the Call of Duty soldier would be very out of place to be in a Super Smash Bros. game.
  • Bubsy (Bubsy): Simply because he was on Nintendo systems, even though this series is somewhat obscure in Japan.
  • Cuphead and Mugman (Cuphead): Aside from a Nintendo Switch port and that Cuphead is a Mii Fighter Costume, Cuphead and StudioMDHR is unheard of in Japan.
  • Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Foxy, Chica, Springtrap and Ballora (Five Night's at Freddy's): Even though the first game was ported to Nintendo Switch, and while Snake, Bayonetta, Joker and Banjo made sense, the animatronics would be very out of place in Smash Bros. and are too scary for people who know nothing about the FNAF games, and that the series is unfriendly to people who are prone to being scared.
  • Carl Johnson, Niko Bellic, and the GTA V trio (Grand Theft Auto): Just because their games are popular, doesn't mean they can join the roster. It's better to Mod the GTA Games and make it the other way around.
  • Claptrap (Borderlands): His series has little to no presence on Nintendo platforms and would be out of place to be in a Smash game.
  • Fortnite skins (Fortnite): They are obscure in Japan (aside from a manga). Just because a series is super popular, does not mean that they can join the roster. Also, Fortnite is notorious for being an addictive game, that the Governments are involved into the game, and Epic Games has a bad reputation of Lawsuits as well.
  • Spyro, Cynder, Ripto, Hunter, and Moneybags (Spyro the Dragon): Simply because he's popular and on Nintendo systems, but Spyro the Dragon is somewhat obscure in Japan.
  • Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot): Same reasons as Spyro with the only difference is Crash Bandicoot is popular around the world.
  • Geno (Super Mario): He is an obscure character who is owned by Square Enix. While it is true that Square Enix has allowed Nintendo to use Cloud from Final Fantasy and the heroes from Dragon Quest, they have only let them use Geno once as a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga prior to letting them use Geno as a Mii Fighter costume in Wii U/3DS and a Spirit in Ultimate. And while it is true that King K. Rool and Banjo & Kazooie were obscure characters, K. Rool was the villain in the Donkey Kong Country franchise, and Banjo and Kazooie were the protagonists of their games, while Geno has only appeared in a single obscure Mario game.
  • Monika (Doki Doki Literature Club!): Just because her PC indie game is popular, and just because the dating sim genre isn't represented yet, doesn't mean she would join the roster, and her game never made it to a Nintendo platform. On that topic, there is a petition on change.org to add Monika in Smash. No joke.
  • Groose (The Legend of Zelda): Groose isn't that popular outside of memes and jokes, and while it's true that the Ice Climbers, Mr. Game and Watch and the Wii Fit Trainer are lesser known characters, Groose only appeared once in a single Zelda game.
  • Navi (The Legend of Zelda): How would Navi fight in battle? Flying?
  • Kratos (God of War): Sony Interactive Entertainment has not released any of their games on Nintendo systems, and while Snake, Bayonetta, Joker and Banjo are in the series, Kratos would be very out of place to be in Super Smash Bros. Also God of War has a gory atmosphere, and would be inappropriate for children.
    • Nathan Drake (Uncharted): See the previous entry. Just because Uncharted is popular, doesn't mean Nathan can join the game.
  • Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal): Same as previous entries, and Twisted Metal is somewhat obscure in Japan.
  • Jak and Daxter (Jak and Daxter): Ditto, and Jak and Daxter would be out of place in a Smash game.
  • Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet): Ditto again. Sackboy being popular is not a valid reason for him to join.
  • Parappa the Rapper (Parappa the Rapper): Same reason as the above mentioned characters. Just because Parappa is popular, doesn't mean he can join the game.
  • Ratchet and Clank (Ratchet and Clank): Same reasons as the above Sony characters.
  • Sly Cooper and Murray (Sly Cooper): Same reasons as the above Sony characters.
  • Kat (Gravity Rush): Same reasons as the above mentioned Sony characters. Being popular doesn't mean Kat would join the game.
  • Steve, Creeper and Alex (Minecraft): No personality and/nor backstory makes them one-dimensional. While it's true that some characters like Mr. Game and Watch, Wii Fit Trainer, and R.O.B share the trait, Steve would look very out of place.
  • Eshop Bag (Nintendo Eshop): How would the Eshop Bag fight in battle, and the Eshop bag is incredibly one-dimensional and is mostly unpopular outside the Nintendo fandom.
  • Saber and Archer (Fate): Even though they originated as visual novel characters, they would look out of place in a Super Smash Bros. game. Being popular doesn't grant an entry in the roster.
  • Sans, Papyrus, Toriel, Frisk, Asriel and Undyne (Undertale): Despite Sans being confirmed as a Mii costume, a huge part of the fandom still wants Sans to be a playable character in Smash (we're not joking) just because Undertale is on Switch or it's popular and the Super Smash Bros. easter egg in Deltarune did not help either.
    • Ralsei, Jevil and Kris (Deltarune): "A popular PC indie game" is not a reason to grant entry into the roster.
    • Sans as a character would never even WANT to fight unless you kill Papyrus and EVERYBODY in Undertale, and having Sans fight everyone in Smash without a valid reason contradicts his role in the lore of Undertale contextually.
  • Escargoon (Kirby): Escargoon isn't that popular outside of memes and he originated in a TV show based on a video game, meaning it would be extremely hard to get him included in the Smash series.
  • Tetrominoes (Tetris): What would the moveset even be?!
  • Fan characters such as Bowsette, Blade and Blue from Super Smash Flash, Coldsteel the Hedgehog, Sonichu, Creepypasta characters, Herobrine, etc.: Too self explanatory.
  • Internet Meme characters: Sometimes overlaps with Non-video game media characters, examples include: Weegee, Sanic, Fat Yoshi, Pepe the Frog, Ugandan Knuckles, Harambe, Big Chungus, Thanos Car, etc.
  • Non-video game media characters from various anime, manga, comics, cartoons, TV shows, movies, books, and real people: Very lengthy and self-explanatory.
  • Beat and Android 21 (Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball FighterZ): While Beat and Android 21 are technically video game characters, it would be close to impossible for any of them to show up in the Super Smash Bros. series, as they were originally created for non-video game media.
  • The New Kid (South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole): Same reason and Beat and Android 21.
  • Bluster Kong/Leo Luster (Donkey Kong): Bluster Kong/Leo Luster isn't that popular outside of memes, and while King K. Rool is also obscure, Bluster Kong/Leo Luster only appeared in the Donkey Kong Country TV show. Speaking of Leo Luster, there is actually a petition to add him to Smash.
  • Wii Balance Board (Wii Fit): What would its moveset be?
  • Polar Bear (Ice Climber): How would the polar bear fight in battle?
  • Goose (Untitled Goose Game): Being on a Nintendo console does not grant the goose a spot in the roster, and the goose is a generic animal. While Piranha Plant is also a generic Mario enemy, Piranha Plant (And by extension, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Shy Guys, and Spikes) makes much more sense since Piranha Plant is OBVIOUSLY a Nintendo property.
  • Tak (Tak and the Power of Juju): Even though Tak's a video game character, he is owned by THQ Nordic, meaning it would be extremely hard for him to be in the Smash series and Tak is obscure in Japan.
  • Crazy Dave and Peashooter (Plants Vs. Zombies): Electronic Arts has shown jealousy to Nintendo ever since the SNES era and hasn't been giving them much support. "An iconic game" is not a valid reason to join the roster.
  • Glover (Glover): Simply because he was on Nintendo systems, even though this game is obscure in Japan.
  • Segata Sanshiro (Sega Saturn): He is just a Sega character who was created for Sega Saturn commercials, and he would be too literally overpowered to be a Smash character.
  • Reckless Silhouette Guy (Wii Start Up Screens): How would its moveset work? Plus, the reckless silhouette guy is incredibly one-dimensional and isn’t that popular outside of the Nintendo fandom.
  • Captain N (Captain N: The Game Master): Captain N is a original character created for a Video game based TV show, and Nintendo doesn't own him.
  • Monokuma (Danganronpa): While the series is made in Japan, Danganronpa has no presence on Nintendo consoles.
  • Socks (Socks the Cat Rocks The Hill): His game was never released and therefore most likely wouldn't have seen an international release due to US politics being unpopular overseas. Just because he was meant to be on a Nintendo platform doesn’t mean he is eligible for the roster.
  • Sandbag (Super Smash Bros.): Even though it originated in Brawl, what would it’s moveset be? At least it is playable in Super Smash Flash 2.
  • Duke Nukem (Duke Nukem): Even though Duke Nukem is on Nintendo hardware, his development studios are pretty obscure in Japan. Not to mention his raunchy atmosphere would be inappropriate for children.
  • Zetterburn (Rivals of Aether): His game has no presence on Nintendo platforms and Microsoft is unpopular in Japan.
  • Vault Boy (Fallout): His series has little to no presence on Nintendo platforms and Bethesda is obscure in Japan.

Does Saber from Fate/Stay Night count as unlikely? Fate/Stay Night started out as a video game and was very popular in Japan.

Also, I have heard that some people at my coffee shop want characters such as Fred Flinstone, Superman, The Cat in the Hat, Bix Nood, Sonichu, Winnie the Pooh, and so on.

Actually, she’d make a poor candidate because 1. Almost all of the Fate/Stay Night games never saw an international release, 2. She’d look WAY out of place, and 3. Nintendo could face a lawsuit from Type/Moon. As for the coffee shop requests, Superman is already out of the question, as he, along with the other characters you’ve mentioned, will not get in due to either obscurity in Japan, no presence on Nintendo consoles, or legal issues.

For video game characters (Like Sora, Master Chief, Doomguy, Scorpion, etc.), they would think that just because they have been on Nintendo consoles or they are just popular. It takes more than popularity to join.

As for non-video game characters, they only want them just because they have video games, popularity, or some lame reason (such as the memes including Shrek memes).
